We got our kicks on Route 66!
We were on the highway for a while when we saw a sign for an antique mall. So, we got off the highway and onto Route 66... for about 250 yards. :-)
It was fun seeing some of the old things like an old gas pump with a glass top.
After the antique mall, we got back on the highway until it was time to see our main attraction of the day: the Totem Pole Park near Foyil. Oklahoma. It's not that this attraction was so anticipated, but more that it was on the way to where we were planning to stop for the night and we wanted to have something interesting to do each day. The Totem Pole Park was right on Route 66.
A retired man constructed the totem poles back in the 1940's.
The turtle base was carved out of a slab of sandstone.
This guy is not impressed...
There was a small gift shop on the property, of course. Inside the shop were about 100 beautiful hand-carved fiddles, all made by the man who established the park, Ed Galloway.
Each fiddle was made out of a different kind of wood. American service men who had known Mr. Galloway sent the wood to him from where they were stationed around the world.
One thing we noticed during the 2 days we spent in Missouri was dead armadillos. Tons of them. Armadillos here, there, and everywhere, dead on the roadside. I didn't know armadillos lived so far north... maybe they don't! Maybe they only come here to die.
