What do you know about bees?
They sting. They make honey. Anything else?
Well, we didn't know much about bees until Steve and the girls went to the Annual Pollinator Day Festival last weekend.
The best part, according to the girls, was being able to hold baby bees! Don't Madeline and Lydia look brave and calm? They found out that baby bees do have stingers, but their muscles aren't yet big enough to allow them to sting people.
The girls had their faces painted at the bee festival, and here are the plants they got for free! They are zinnias and bees love them.
Here are a few things they remember from their day:
Bees live about 20-40 days.
They travel up to 3 miles away from their home to gather nectar.
When a bee emerges from its cell, its first job is to clean out the cell.
The only workers are the females, who are daughters of the queen.
The queen bee is bigger than the other bees but her black stripes are thinner than the other bees.
